Dark Horse is bloody thrilled to present the most terrifying team-up of talent to hit the comics scene in years, as fan-favorite horror scribe Steve Niles (30 Days of Night, Dark Days, Criminal Macabre) joins artist Kelley Jones (Deadman, Batman, TheHammer) to bring you the follow-up to last year’s hit miniseries Criminal Macabre, Last Train to Deadsville takes supernatural private ~censored~ Cal McDonald and his ghoulish partner Mo’Lock on their weirdest adventure yet, when a teenage, mulleted weirdo from suburbia takes his occult fantasies a little—okay, A LOT—too far. And Ozzy thought his train was crazy!

He's ba-aaaack!

Cal McDonald-the hair-triggered, smart ass, tough guy, private ~censored~ monster hunter comes back to Dark Horse this month, and he's brought his strangest nemesis with him.

Horror maestro Steve Niles collaborated with fantastic artist Kyle Hotz (Marvel's Manthing, Dark Horse's Billy the Kid ) to bring to vivid, spooky life Cal's first-ever encounter with a real-deal golem. From the folklore of Jewish mysticism, the earthy homunculus is given shape and purpose by a grief-stricken father, out to exact vengeance on the man who attacked his daughter. In a bizarre twist of fate, the golem is loosed on the world with no master and only one known purpose-to kill! Cal's gotta do whatever it takes to stop this marauding hunk of clay from a pointless killing spree or . . . or, there's gonna be a pointless killing spree!

Working as a private ~censored~ is weird business, no matter how you look at it. But working as a private ~censored~ in a world populated by ghouls, monsters and other creatures of the night -- well, that's as weird as it gets. Welcome to the world of Cal McDonald. When a bizarre string of strangulation murders hits the streets of Los Angeles, and the bodies are found covered in blood, at first it seems like a madman is on the loose. But when it's revealed that the blood isn't from the victims -- and in fact, it's not even of human origin -- Cal sets his sights on a rendering warehouse close to where the bodies were found. 30 Days of Night creators Niles and Templesmith give whole new meaning to the phrase Meat Is Murder.

The Dark Horse horror line offers up a special bag of tricks for autumn. Following up their smash-hit series Criminal Macabre, Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith present Cal McDonald's latest case, in which the foul-mouthed private ~censored~ rubs elbows with undead gangsters in Las Vegas. The Goon creator Eric Powell introduces us to the even seedier side of life in his zombie-infested burg, featuring the Goon's eight-armed, hard-luck poker buddy Spider. Brett Matthews, who wrote the Angel comic with Joss Whedon and has written Spiderman/Daredevil and Spiderman/Wolverine for Marvel, and artist Sean Phillips (Sleeper), give us a twisted taste of the upcoming Tales of the Vampires, the new series of comics written by Joss Whedon and the writers from his TV show. No tricks -- this comic's ALL treats!

Escaped mad doctors and possessed muscle cars are all in a day's work for supernatural investigator Cal McDonald and his undead sidekick Mo'Lock. When an old enemy Cal sent to prison escapes, his sights are set on exacting cold revenge on the guy who put him there. And it looks like he'll have to cut through everyone Cal loves to get to him… Perfect.
Cal knows what he's up against, and he's hardly batting an eye. He's already put this guy away once, and it's not like prison makes people bitter, right? And besides-things are looking up. He's even got a new car to brag about-a spiffy 1973 Nova. Too bad the guy who died in the car before Cal bought it has no intention of leaving.

Quote: Martha Washington grew up in the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago (called "The Green") with her mother and two brothers in abject poverty brought on by the economic policies of the President Erwin Rexall. She is an average student, but one who displays a gift for computer programming and hacking.

Her teacher, Donald, encourages her to be a better student and, because he lives outside the Green, brings her contraband items. One night Martha shows up at Donald’s classroom and finds that he’s been murdered by the Ice Man, a large thug who works for a local gangster called the Pope. Before dying, Donald managed to stab the Ice Man in the wrist. This distraction allowed Martha to seize his weapon, a longshoreman’s hook, and plunge it into his shoulder. The Ice Man chases her through the school to a locker room, but before he can kill her, he dies of blood loss. Martha is later remanded to a psychiatric hospital.

In the institution, she discovers that experiments are being secretly performed on children to genetically alter their minds, effectively turning them into human computers. Their heads are covered with wires plugged into their brains. Martha believes one of them resembles the Raggedy Ann doll she played with as a child. This insititution is closed due to national budget cuts, and Martha is left homeless. She later joins the PAX Peace Force, where her heroic tale begins.

Quote: Martha Washington's first appearance. It features Martha joining the PAX Peace Force - a reinvented U.S. Army - and engaging in various heroic efforts, such as saving the rainforests of South America from crazed cattle ranchers. She eventually has to thwart the megalomanical plans of Colonel Moretti before as he brings the country to the brink of destruction.

Quote: Martha Washington -- prisoner, runaway, lunatic, soldier, and now seditionist -- has seen the future. It looks great on paper, but it doesn't work. The U.S. government is controlled by power-hungry nutcases. The ecology is a shambles. Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it . . . nobody, that is, except PAX and the very expensive weather-control satellite, Harmony. In Martha Washington Goes to War, it's Martha vs. PAX and the United States government, and the odds are more even than you might think!

Quote: Happy Birthday, Martha Washington contains three complete short stories featuring Martha Washington. In "State of the Art," Martha is combat testing a new weapons system when she comes up against an enemy soldier outfitted with the same system; this story originally appeared in the hard-to-find San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2. From the DHP Fifth Anniversary Special comes a story in which Martha learns a lesson about either political agendas or political incompetence; the judges are still out. And in an all-new story, a young Martha goes on assignment to meet America's great war hero, a super soldier who's been fighting the good fight since America's glory days of World War II; and at the rate he's going, the lucky stiff will be around for World War III.

The first two stories were originally presented in black and white, but are presented here in full color. All three stories have been colored by Angus McKie, whose work on MWGTW made the art community stand up and take notice. And to top it all off, Dave Gibbons is producing a beautiful new cover. We should all get such favored treatment on our birthdays!

Quote: On Earth, the battle for freedom rages on. The year is 2095 and the day is the one-hundredth birthday of Martha Washington. She is the leader of a small, resolute band that will not forfeit the pursuit of liberty-no matter what the cost. Today, the cost will be high. Martha has seen much in her hundred years, from the triumphs and tragedies of the battlefront, to the deepest reaches of space. Today, she will finally see the truth.

Includes a special section of never-before-seen production sketches and drawings that predate Martha's first series, Give Me Liberty, along with Frank Miller's original plot notes, all wrapped inside a high-quality card stock cover. This all-new story by two of comics' legendary creators is the unprecedented conclusion to one woman's epic struggle for life's most valuable quality-freedom.

Miller and Gibbons reunite to tell the final chapter!

Quote: Dirty Pair is a humorous science fiction anime and manga franchise based on the light novel series by Haruka Takachiho.

The stories take place in the years 2138-43, by which time humanity has spread across some few thousand star systems. A corporation called the World Welfare Works Association (also WWWA or 3WA) helps member systems of the United Galactica (UG) federation deal with various planetary-scale problems, for profit, by sending agents called "trouble consultants". Probably the most high-profile arm of the organization is the Criminal Investigations section, which works to solve crimes or mysteries. The series focuses on a team of trouble consultants in that section, named Kei and Yuri, who have a reputation for leaving a trail of destruction behind them, for which they are known publicly as the "Dirty Pair".

The franchise has bounced across multiple formats and production companies, resulting in (so far), seven novels and a few shorter stories, a television series, two OVA series, two OVA features, a feature film, and a number of graphic novels.

The instigation of "the DP Concept" was a visit to Japan by the British Australian SF author A. Bertram Chandler, probably in 1978. On his itinerary was a stop at the young Studio Nue, which Takachiho co-founded. As something to entertain their guest, two of the staffers there, Tanaka Yuri and Otoguro Keiko, hit upon the idea with Takachiho of taking Chandler to a tournament of the All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling organization, which was a member of the World Women's Wrestling Association (WWWA). The card included the highly-popular wrestling (and singing!) team, the Beauty Pair. Something that passed among the foursome during that match lead Chandler to remark to Takachiho something to the effect that "the two women in the ring may be the Beauty Pair, but those two with you ought to be called 'the Dirty Pair'."

This became the germ of an idea for a little novella Takachiho decided to write, transplanting the rough-housing of pro-wrestling to the realm of space-opera mystery stories, with which he already had experience in his already successful Crusher Joe series. The team code-name "Lovely Angels" is also play on the names of certain of the women's teams of the time, such as the Queen Angels.
