Quote: Ghost was a comic book superhero published by Dark Horse Comics. The character appeared in specials and monthly titles detailing the "afterlife" of Elisa Cameron and her search for the truth surrounding her apparent death.

Ghost first appeared in Comics Greatest World week 3 (1993). After a popular special in 1994, a monthly title Ghost, devoted to the character appeared in 1995 and ran for 36 issues, followed by a six-month break and a second series running for 22 issues, serving as a continuation of the first, with many changes made early on to separate the two, mostly by filling in the blank's of "Ghost's" origin. The stories in both series revolved around the city of Arcadia, firmly entrenched in a self-contained fictional universe outlined in Dark Horse's Comics Greatest World.

The characters of Comics Greatest World were widely derided as an attempt to cash in on the "speculator boom" of the 1990s and the publishing histories of most of the series in the line were short-lived. Ghost, however, continued appearing in her own titles and others into the 2000s, including several crossovers not related to Comics' Greatest World. Most notable among these were a two-issue crossover with Dark Horse's Hellboy (Ghost/Hellboy Special), and a four-issue crossover with DC Comics Batgirl (Ghost/Batgirl: The Resurrection Engine).


Quote: The first series (1995-1998 ) was written, starting with the first special, by Eric Luke, who had also scripted the film Explorers. He gave the series an intelligent punch uncommon to many contemporary female superheroes. The artwork was by a revolving door of talent, although to the credit of the editors, the series maintained high visual standards. The setting of Arcadia was intended to be grim yet Art Deco, something particularly reflected in the artwork of the early issues.

Quote: In 1939, Arcadia bore witness to a murder carried out by a crimeboss and his pet ax because of pilferage form his almighty coffers. The only problem was that death didn't stop poor Vinnie from mocking the "boss," and his laughter echoed on even past the thresholds of demise. To help remedy this little predicament, the "boss" enlisted the aid of a Dr. Herbert Izzo to make it stop. Well, after Herbert's job was done in a most Lovecraftian fashion, he was repaid in the most special of ways, joining the man he could still hear laughing inside a brick-and-mortar encased tomb left inside an apartment building. Fast forward to the present, where Hellboy investigates the presence of ex-reporter turned vengeful spirit, Elisa Cameron, and the two stumble on this scene of the past that has never been laid to rest. And that's when the oddities that only Mike Mignola can create are truly brought spectacularly to the surface, meshing the woes of Hellboy with the plight of the Ghost in memorable fashion.

Returning to his Arcadian home away from home, Mike Mignola paints something that his Will to Power days could never conceive; a portrait of Hellboy spawned perfection in the minimalist light and shadow play that soaks all of his Hellboy projects in both art and story. Originally a two comic series, it has the luxury of not continuing on too long or ending too soon, giving you something that is memorable because of the mind behind it and because of the way its presented by his support cast.
