Default India Wait On Their Skipper

The fitness of captain Anil Kumble is a concern for India ahead of the second Test against South Africa, which starts on Thursday.

Experienced leg-spinner Kumble, who is the third highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, suffered a groin strain in the drawn first Test last week and did not take the field in the final two sessions.

"We just have to wait. We'll take a final call tomorrow morning," Kumble said on Wednesday.

India will definitely miss Sachin Tendulkar in Ahmedabad, the talismanic batsman having also picked up a groin injury in Chennai.

The hosts' bowling appears worst hit, with it still remaining unclear whether Ishant Sharma will return for the second Test.

The promising paceman has been out of action with a foot injury since returning from India's tour of Australia.

Left-arm seamer RP Singh, who is coming back from injury, went wicketless in the first Test and looked way below his best.

With Mohammad Kaif drafted into the squad in place of Tendulkar, the hosts plan to promote VVS Laxman up the batting order to fill the gap created by the latter's absence.

Laxman normally bats at number six but is likely to be pushed up to number four on a responsive pitch as he is considered one of the team's better players of fast bowling.

"He will certainly come up the order," Kumble said.

The captain added that India's injury concerns meant that a final decision on their starting line-up will be delayed.

"But we have enough potential and quality to do the job," Kumble stressed. "We have worked out some plans to ensure that we put pressure on the South Africans and get the right result."

South Africa coach Micky Arthur said on Tuesday that the tourists may resort to fast, short-pitched bowling in order to counter opener Virender Sehwag, who hit the fastest recorded triple century in the first Test.

Kumble added: "I think he's (Sehwag) a good enough batsman to handle that. He scored 319 in the last innings and is capable of handling whatever comes his way."
