Ireland summer of woe ends on low South Africa 111 for 5 (Terblanche 37) beat Ireland 103 for 7 by 8 runs South Africa women put the finishing touches to Ireland's miserable summer in beating them by 8 runs in their only Twenty20 to leave them without a win in any form of the game this season. The loss means Ireland have won only one match this year, against Netherlands in their disappointing World Cup qualifiers campaign which saw them miss out on both the 50-over and, by default, 20-over competitions. But South Africa's batsmen showed their Twenty20 inexperience by patting away 57 dot balls in total after being sent in. They reached a moderate 111 for 5 on a large field where boundaries were at a premium. Daleen Terblanche topscored with 37, Analie Minny made 22 and Alicia Smith 20. Then their slow bowlers put the brakes on Ireland. Charlize van der Westhuizen took 1 for 13 off her four overs, while Sunette Loubser picked up 1 for 9 from hers. Ireland could only muster 103 for 7. Smith completed a useful allround contribution with 2 for 27. South Africa's coach Noor Rhode was again unhappy about ragged fielding at times, including more unnecessary overthrows following on from Thursday's ODI. He was also unimpressed about the dot balls his batsmen allowed. The tourists will have to up their game further on Monday when they face the England Academy at Reading in another Twenty20. |
