What exactly .DLL Means? You may have often heard about dll files, but you may not know exactly what it means. This article would help you in obtaining some general information related to dll files. In very simple terms dll file or dynamic link library is a collection of small programs, or support files for some types of software. Mostly, these files are located in the directory of your Windows System. Whenever the need arises, it can be called upon by the executable program (EX) that is running on your Windows. Often, the dll files let the EX or the executable program communicate with a specific required device such as a printer. But sometimes it cannot let the executable program communicate automatically. At such times, it contains source code to do particular functions. For example suppose if the executable program requires the free space of your hard drive. Then, it can call the DLL file containing the function with specific parameters and a call function. The DLL file would then tell the executable program the required free space. This will enable the executable program to be in proper size and thus it will write only the existing function. This will give the information about the free space to the executable program, and there is no necessity to write all the source code on your hard drive thus it saves space. Whenever a DLL file is used in this manner, it is also called as shared file. The main advantage of DLL files is that they save the space in Random Access Memory (RAM), as they do not get loaded into it along with the main program. It is loaded only if a dll file is called upon. For example, if you want to edit a Microsoft Word document, then there is no necessity to load DLL file of the printer into Random Access Memory. If there is a need to print the document, then the DLL file of the printer is downloaded automatically and a call is made to print the page. Along with, saving space, it also saves time as many of the files are already installed in the windows. In simple words, you can say that a dll file is an executable file that runs with the help of another executable file from inside Windows. |

How to Perform DLL Repair ?
Identify the Error DLL files often contain a wide variety of instructions of which most often you will only need one, two, or several at a time. Because of this, the DLL errors you’re faced with are often particular to the program or function being attempted when they occur. For the best results (and conversely, the least amount of difficulty) in attempting DLL repair, note down as much information about the DLL error in question as you can. At the very least, you should record the following: • the name and location of the corrupt DLL file • the DLL Error type • the program running (or attempting to run) that elicited the problem • any other actions you were taking (or trying to take) and/or functions you were performing (or trying to perform) when the error occurred You should attempt to regenerate the error in order to help determine the exact reason. DLL Repair Overkill One broad sweeping method for conducting DLL repair without needing to know anything about the DLL file and DLL error in question, DLL files and DLL errors in general, or much of anything at all about your PC is to reinstall Windows. Of course this is a major undertaking that is rather like getting an organ transplant when all you really need to do is eat right and exercise. If, however, your DLL problems have simply gotten out of control, starting over with a fresh slate may be the best and easiest solution for you. In such a case, just be sure that no program settings are damaged or lost in any way. If you can at all avoid having to reinstall Windows, you probably should. And fortunately there are other methods for handling DLL repair to try before you ever have to consider such a drastic “solution”. The System File Checker (SFC) A less extensive and more direct method for performing DLL repair is to use the System File Checker (SFC) utility that’s built into Microsoft Windows. There are two ways to use this tool: 1. Before installing any new software on your system, run the System File Checker utility to scan all the system files on your hard disk and create a list of all of them for you. Save this list. Even better, print it out and keep it somewhere safe. Whenever a DLL error arises, run the SFC utility again and compare your new list against the old one. This will help you quickly identify where the problem files might be located. Once you’ve identified the problem DLL files, you’re more than halfway to fixing them. (Read our related article: “How to Perform a DLL Fix” for details on how to do this) 2. Alternatively, you can use the SFC to extract any data relevant to the error from your Cabinet Files. Cabinet Files are a Windows extension that contain all of a PC’s system files in compressed form. Extract the related DLL files from these compressed Cabinet files and use them to replace the corresponding corrupted files involved with the error (such as the applications linked to the DLL files in question). Your Best Bet For fast and hassle-free DLL repair, however, your best bet is to purchase, install, and run a top quality registry cleaner or registry repair program (two interchangeable names for the same general piece of software technology). Make sure, of course, that the one you select handles DLL repair - though almost all of them do. Registry repair software was designed by experts to handle the types of problems that confound the average computer user (including this writer). This makes them the safest and most effective method of performing DLL repair - next to paying a professional a ton more money to fix it for you. |

How to Fix DLL Errors ?
Why DLL Errors Occur There are numerous causes for DLL errors, and as such a multitude ways to fix DLL errors depending, in large part, on the cause. Most often, DLL errors arise after one or more DLL files have either been modified (such as: overwritten or corrupted) or erased. DLL files are typically shared, meaning that more than one program uses it to hold pertinent routine procedures and settings information. Uninstalling one program, therefore, can detrimentally affect another program as any DLL files they share may be deleted along with the uninstalled program. Another way DLL errors occur is by a new program or program update being installed with a new or conflicting version of that shared DLL file overwriting it. To Fix DLL Errors You Must First Know What It Is To properly and effectively fix DLL errors, you must first know the nature of the error and the affected DLL file. To find out the nature of the error, perform a web search for the exact DLL error name and description that has appeared on your screen. To find the affected DLL file or files, perform the following steps: 1. Go to System Tools 2. Go to System Information 3. Run MSINFO32.exe (if you cannot locate it, then: • Open your Start menu • Click Run • Type in “MSINFO32.EXE” and press Enter 4. Open the Tools menu 5. Select the System File Checker 6. Click Scan for altered files 7. BEFORE PRESSING START - go now to Settings 8. Go to the tab marked Search Criteria 9. Chose C:\Windows\System from the pane located at the top portion of the dialog box 10. Click *.dl from the pane labeled files to check 11. Hit OK 12. Back once again at the Scan dialog box, click Start The process your PC will now undergo may take a while. What it is doing, essentially, is reviewing your entire System folder to root out all altered and corrupted DLL files. At the scan’s end, you will be given a list of them all, along with options for you to handle each of them. How to Fix Errors Caused by Overwriting a DLL File If you accidentally overwrite a DLL file (or intentionally do it, only to unwittingly cause trouble), you can fix it in one of two ways: • If an update is available, update the application you installed; • Copy and register onto your system the later (more current) version of the DLL file off of the internet or from a networked computer If both of those methods fail, you might try using System Restore in order to rollback your PC to an earlier point in time before the error had occurred. The Best Way to Fix DLL Errors The foolproof and failsafe method of fixing DLL errors is regularly cleaning your Windows Registry. Although this is difficult to do (and do right) manually, it is easy as can be to run a top-notch registry cleaning program to do it for you. In fact, the best registry cleaners include scheduling features with which you can set regular registry scans and repairs to run automatically in the background at recurring intervals. In addition to cleaning your Windows registry regularly, it is also worth doing any time that you install or uninstall a program, as these are among the most frequent times when new DLL errors arise. |

How To Perform a DLL Fix ?
Back Up - Before You Do Anything Else Before you take any measures to perform a DLL fix, make a copy of it and save it in a location you’ll remember in case you need to retrieve it later. It may sound unlikely, but it’s entirely possible that you may need to reinstall that very DLL file. For example some application may later require an instruction unique to that DLL file that isn’t present in your “fixed” version. Whatever the reason, keeping a copy of the “broken” DLL file on your hard drive (say, in your My Documents folder or on your desktop) could potentially save you a lot of further headache later on. Different Versions of DLL Files One of the primary causes of DLL errors is an incorrect version of the DLL file needed being loaded. As DLL files, like applications, are constantly being upgraded and improved, this kind of problem can happen quite frequently. Even though most DLL files are backwards compatible with earlier versions, they may sometimes be missing a particular element or feature needed by the application calling them up. In such cases, you may need to download and install several versions (whether earlier or later) of said DLL file in order to find the one that does the job. The Obvious DLL Fix The easiest solution to fixing a corrupt DLL file is simply to reinstall it. Do a web search for the same DLL file online. Chances are you’ll be able to find it and download it for free. Then delete the corrupt DLL file (after you’ve made that all-important backup) and replace it with this new one. So long as you put it in the right place on your machine (note where the corrupt DLL file was located and put the new one there), this may save your problem right there. However, not all websites are equally trustworthy, and some sources of free DLL downloads may bundle spyware or even viruses in with the download - so be careful. Before you try deleting and reinstalling the DLL file in question, then, consider the following alternative measures you can take instead to fix the problem yourself. Before Deleting and Reinstalling a DLL File First, close down all applications open on your system. Then try and reopen only the application that presented you with the problem and perform the same exact actions you performed when you were first presented with the problem). Sometimes this alone can is all the DLL fix you need, as the problem may have been caused by nothing other than one too many programs (or just the wrong program) running on your system at once. If it still doesn’t work then restart your computer and try the same method again. If this quick DLL fix still doesn’t work then you may find the information in our follow up article: “How to Perform DLL Repair?” useful. |
