Buju Banton - Ultimate Collection (2001)
![]() In the early 1990s, teenager Buju Banton achieved notoriety in Jamaica's raucous dancehall scene with a series of controversial songs. But as he matured, he dropped the "guns and girls" lyrics of his youth in favor of songs that reflected his growing interest in social and spiritual matters. Ultimate Collection gathers 18 of Banton's more socially conscious songs including "Murderer," a powerful cry of rage directed at the killer of one of his friends, and "How the World a Run," a theological dissertation set to an irresistible dancehall riddim. Banton has a remarkably wide musical range, and selections such as "No Respect," which features a sonically complex digital production, "Untold Stories," an introspective song backed by a simply strummed acoustic guitar, and "Hills and Valleys," with its old-style roots feel, demonstrate his mastery of most of reggae's musical offshoots. Banton's music is a throwback to the days of Bob Marley, a time when the most positive messages were set to the strongest beat, and the best songs touched your heart and mind even as they made you get up and dance. -- Michael Simmons 01. Buju Movin' (03:40) 02. Ring The Alarm Quick (Extended Mix)(Ft. Tenor Saw) (05:48) 03. How The World A Run (03:56) 04. No Respect (04:00) 05. Operation Ardent (03:57) 06. Songs for Reggae Lovers 2CD (2008)
![]() Date Of Release: Feb 26, 2008 Label: Greensleeves Records Ltd. Genre: Reggae, International, Ska/Calypso Quality: MP3 / Joint Stereo Bitrate: 179 kpbs / 44.1 Khz Total Time: 112:58 Total Size: 153.4MB Not to be confused with the lite-reggae "lovers rock" genre that sweetened British pop charts in the 1970s and '80s, this generous two-disc compilation raids the Greensleeves Records back catalog for real reggae that happens to cover romantic themes, including such soulful numbers as Wayne Wonder's "No Letting Go," Gregory Isaacs's "Caught You In A Lie," and Junior Delgado's cute "Love Tickles Like Magic." Its release was timed to coincide with Valentine's Day 2008, and the collection makes a sweet gift for a sweetheart, but also stands up as a comprehensive guide to some of the tastiest reggae tracks of the past several years. :: TRACKLIST :: CD 1 01 Jacob Miller - Baby I Love You So 2:30 02 Johnny Osbourne - Ice Cream Love 3:23 03 Deborahe Glasgow - This Love 4:19 04 Mighty Diamonds - Tonight I'm Gonna Take It Easy 4:17 05 Cocoa Tea - Getting Closer 3:55 06 John Holt - Sweetie Come Brush Me 3:23 07 Gregory Isaacs - Caught You In A Lie 3:53 08 Dennis Brown - Hello 3:54 09 Bunny Rugs - Now That We Found Love 3:06 10 Junior Delgado - Love Tickles Like Magic 2:45 11 J.C.
