Yanni - In The Mirror



This is billed as "a collection of Yanni favorites," and fans of this popular pianist should be pleased with the selections; they are a fine sampling of his work. "In the Mirror" is a delicate solo piano piece, a musical cascade full of lush arpeggios. "In the Morning Light" is an exploration of a simple melodic theme. Yanni has a soft touch, and every track shows his tender approach to music-making. "Forbidden Dreams" kicks things up to a slightly higher level of energy, as Yanni uses a more synthesized, techno approach, and "Chasing Shadows" continues in that vein; a textured, electronic tapestry, both compelling and slyly powerful. The sonatas come from different periods of Hummel’s life, that in E flat (which was originally for viola) from 1798, the other from some 15 years later. The Nocturne appears to have been written originally for piano duet with two horns ad lib., about as eccentric a combination as can be imagined for domestic music-making; it was composed around 1822 and published in 1824. It has a lengthy, strong Adagio opening followed by an elaborate set of variations, and is certainly worth reviving in whatever form. Of the sonatas, that in D is the more powerful work, and it receives a fresh, sympathetic performance from Holmes and Burnett. The fortepiano, a Conrand Graf of 1826, sounds beautiful. It is credited as having been tuned by Alastair Laurence, which presumably also means prepared and generally attended to, Laurence being himself a distinguished maker of pianos.
