Dialogue continues between the two clubs over a potential £25million deal, with Chelsea boosted by fresh reports from Spain that the 24-year-old has rejected a new five-year contract worth around £60,000-a-week. Robinho could command around double that salary at Chelsea, although Madrid's willingness to sell may still hinge upon their success in recruiting Cristiano Ronaldo. Chelsea, though, have been talking openly and with relish about the possibility of bringing a Brazilian flavour to their attacking options. "Robinho is a great player, who plays in one of the best teams in the world – Real Madrid – and in the national team of Brazil," Scolari said. "It's the time for speculation. It's the time for agents to put one story here, one there. They change this and that. But he's a very good player." Chief executive Peter Kenyon said Robinho had the style to bring a new dimension to Chelsea's football. "The coach has said that he is a player that we have identified who is a talent, and a different talent who, if we could get him, would add to what we've got at the club already," Kenyon said. "We have shown interest in Robinho and have had some conversations with the club. That is ongoing. If we don't get him, our objectives at Chelsea will not change. We remain in dialogue." Robinho is currently with the Madrid squad in Irdning, Austria, as part of their pre-season training camp and will not go to the Beijing Olympic Games with Brazil. The possibility of Frank Lampard leaving Chelsea for Inter Milan this summer also appeared to lengthen last night as Jose Mourinho closed in on a £12.7million deal for Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari. Meanwhile, Scolari has nipped any comparisons with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in the bud. No doubt aware that his predecessor, Avram Grant, was forced to endure months of questioning, the Brazilian had a simple message. "My name is Luiz Felipe Scolari, not Jose Mourinho," he said. "I have my own personality and I follow my way, not another way. I don't know whether Mourinho said he'd win this or that, but if he did I say things differently. I say what any coach would say in the world: that we need to win. Only this. With a CV that includes lifting the World Cup, Scolari's words felt more convincing than eight months of Grant attempting to persuade fans that he was taking Chelsea to a new style of playing. Aside from winning, Scolari also hopes to promote more attacking football. "I will try," he said, "but I don't know. I answer in June 2009. I have young players at Chelsea. I've got experience at Chelsea. We've got the desire to win at Chelsea. We are in a position where we can succeed. Creating a family atmosphere is a step-by-step process." The players appear suitably impressed. Indeed, Salomon Kalou, who scored the first goal of the Scolari era in Wednesday's 4-0 friendly victory against Guangzhou Pharmaceutical, said that being overly cautious had cost Chelsea last season. "Grant didn't really change anything, but you can see from the players Scolari has taken and the way we played that things are going to be different," he said. "The manager wants to play an attacking game. "Players like Deco, Ballack and Lampard can really put good balls through to the strikers so it's going to be a good season for us. We were too cautious last season." Chelsea continue their pre-season tour of Asia tomorrow with a match against Chengdu Blades in Macau, whose team include Li Tie, the former Everton midfielder. New signing Jose Bosingwa could miss the rest of the tour after his thigh strain against Guangzhou. Michael Ballack is poised to join up with the squad, but is not likely to feature in any matches until the Railways Cup tournament in Moscow at the end of next week. |
